Family Tree Adoption Agency provides home study services for all families adopting through the agency. Additionally Family Tree is a local home study service provider for families who choose to adopt from another source or state. This includes private placement adoptions, international adoptions and step parent adoptions.

The home study is an in-depth interview whose primary purpose is to explore with applicants their adoption goals and prepare them as adoptive parents. Our goal is to provide you with adoption information so you can think through your decision and decide for yourself “Is adoption right for me at this time?”

All families who wish to adopt must have a home study. The process involves meetings with a social worker, which includes a visit to your home as well as an office visit. In addition, prospective adoptive parents each complete a questionnaire, and other home study application materials. The staff of Family Tree is trained to help families explore in depth their motivation to adopt, resources available, family and personal life, marriage, divorce, finances, education, occupation, health and background checks including fingerprinting and access to the New York State Central Register on Child Abuse and Maltreatment clearances.

It is natural to feel a bit anxious or apprehensive about the home study process as you are sharing your personal history and feelings. Rest assured that while you need to meet New York State requirements for adoption; the primary purpose of the home study is to help prospective adoptive parents assess their readiness for adoption and to educate and prepare parents about the uniqueness of adoptive parenting.

Upon completion of the meetings, a document known as the home study is written. This document is your “life story” and serves to describe you to the agency, courts, or others involved in your adoption.
