Welcome!
We would like to take this opportunity to introduce ourselves to you and to provide you with some information about our agency and the services that we provide. Decisions about what to do about considering adoption can be difficult and somewhat painful. We will offer you choices in making the best plan for you and your child. We welcome pregnant women/ couples and children of all ethnic backgrounds and cultures.
Who We Are:
Founded in 1991 by an adoptive parent, Family Tree Adoption Agency is a New York State Authorized, Not-For-Profit Adoption Agency.
Adoption Planning
There are many reasons why people make adoption plans for their children. Often times a parent doesn’t feel they have the support from those around them to be able to raise a child in the way they believe a child should be raised. They may want their child to have opportunities they don’t feel they can give them. Whatever the reasons, parents always want what is best for their child. That is a feeling that comes out of love and caring.
We encourage you to take an active role in planning for your child’s future. We believe in openness and open adoptions, so you may select the adoptive parents for your child. For some parents this is comfortable, for others it is not. We will support you with whatever level of openness you choose.
You will have the opportunity to meet adoptive parents, choose the family that is right for your child and spend time with them if you’d like to.
Some parents feel that this helps them to feel much better about their plan as it gives them the opportunity to really get to know the family who will be raising their child. Adoptive parents can go to your doctors visits and be there in the delivery room with you if you desire.
For other pregnant women, the decision of selecting the adoptive parents is left up to the Agency staff. We will select them confidentially for you if you feel this would be best. All of our adoptive parents go through a rigorous screening process. They are required to attend educational workshops on adoption, read and be studied by a social worker that also visits their home. All our families are very excited about becoming adoptive parents and will be willing to work with you in whatever capacity you desire. This ‘Self-Directed’ adoption planning is preferred by birth parents that seek our professional services because it gives them the control over their life and the future of their child to fully plan the adoption.
The decision to make an adoption plan for your child is probably the hardest decision you’ll ever make. We can help you make a more informed decision and be better prepared to work through this difficult time. Love and family are the greatest gifts you can offer your child. A family to provide the security, warmth and stability that may not be available to you right now is something a child needs to grow and flourish. Family Tree will work with you throughout this process to provide the education and support necessary to see your wishes through.
Pregnancy Counseling
Talking about your decision to place a child for adoption can help you sort out what your feelings are.
Many times, when people are under stress, it is hard to know what the best thing to do is. Having someone like a counselor that is neutral and isn’t going to judge you can make it a little easier. Sometimes it can be hard to talk to your friends and family. You might not want to share all your thoughts and feelings with someone who knows you well. We encourage you to enlist support from your family and friends-the people you feel safe with.
You may be feeling angry, depressed or guilty or just plain alone. It can be scary to feel that you are the only one going through such a painful period. At other times you may feel special and important that you are able to go through something so difficult with strength and courage. These feelings are all normal and OK! Talking with a counselor may help you to realize this. All of us need support during difficult times in our lives. It is available to you if you want it. Meetings are confidential, and can be held in the office or in your home.
Peer Counseling and Support
Talking with other birth parents that have made an adoption plan for their child is an option that is open to you. Through one-on-one conversations or in a support group setting, these talks may be very helpful. You may be wondering:
Am I the only person who has ever gone through feeling;
Alone?
Unsure?
Hopeless?
Helpless?
Confused?
Scared?
Asking and talking to someone who has gone through a similar experience may make your burden a little lighter.
All of these meetings or conversations are CONFIDENTIAL, so your privacy will be insured.
